Foreign travelers heading to Japan in 2026 have one more reason to look south. Kagoshima Prefecture is launching a campaign that offers eligible international visitors a free one-way ride on the Kyushu Shinkansen from Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo — a journey that usually costs around ¥11,500. Yes, that’s a bullet train ride for ¥0.

The campaign allows overseas tourists to board the sleek Kyushu Shinkansen at Hakata Station in Fukuoka and glide all the way down to Kagoshima-Chuo Station in roughly 90 minutes. Normally, this comfortable high-speed trip comes with a premium price tag, but Kagoshima is fully subsidizing the fare as part of its ambitious tourism revival strategy.
The initiative is backed by a generous tourism budget aimed at encouraging visitors to explore beyond Japan’s “Golden Route” of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
Who Can Get the Free Ticket?
The first phase of the program will target travelers arriving from regions with direct flights to Kagoshima, including South Korea, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. There are also plans to expand eligibility to more countries, potentially including the United States and Thailand, depending on the campaign’s success.
Exact booking procedures and eligibility requirements are expected to be announced soon, so travelers should keep an eye out for updates.
Why Kagoshima Is Worth the Trip?

Once you arrive in Kagoshima Prefecture, you’ll quickly see why the region is making this bold move. Often called the “Naples of Japan,” Kagoshima boasts dramatic views of Sakurajima, an active volcano that rises impressively from the bay.
You can unwind in a soothing seaside onsen, feast on melt-in-your-mouth Kurobuta pork, stroll through the historic samurai district of Chiran, or explore lush subtropical islands nearby.
Japan continues to welcome record-breaking numbers of international visitors, but many travelers stick to the well-trodden cities. By offering a free Shinkansen ride, Kagoshima hopes to tempt visitors to venture further south and discover one of Kyushu’s most charming destinations.
If Kagoshima is already on your itinerary, consider this your sign. And if it wasn’t? A free bullet train ride might just change your plans.
