Travelers flying to and from Japan may want to double-check their charging habits before boarding. Starting April 2026, Japan will introduce stricter airline rules on the use of portable mobile batteries — better known as power banks — during flights.

The move is part of a nationwide safety update aimed at reducing in-flight fire risks linked to lithium-ion batteries.

Why the New Rules?

The updated directive comes from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, which has officially notified airlines of the upcoming changes.

Lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in power banks, have been linked to overheating incidents and small onboard fires in recent years. While rare, such situations are particularly dangerous inside an aircraft cabin, where space is limited and safety risks must be contained immediately.

To minimize potential hazards, authorities have decided to tighten regulations before problems escalate further.

What Will Change in April 2026?

Under the new rules, passengers will not be allowed to use power banks during flights. Charging devices via portable batteries in the cabin will be prohibited. Power banks must still be carried in hand luggage only, as checked baggage remains prohibited.

The key change focuses on usage, meaning travelers can still bring their portable chargers onboard, but they won’t be able to plug in mid-air.

The regulation will apply to domestic flights within Japan, international flights departing from Japan, and international flights arriving in Japan.

In short, if you’re flying through Japan after April 2026, these rules will apply to you.

What Travelers Should Do?

If you’re planning a trip to Japan next year or beyond, it’s best to fully charge your devices before boarding and make use of airport charging stations prior to departure. Bringing charging cables for in-seat power outlets, if available on your aircraft, will also help. Conserving battery during the flight may become part of your travel routine.

While it may feel slightly inconvenient for frequent flyers and digital nomads, the goal is simple: safer skies for everyone. So next time you pack for Japan, just remember — your power bank can come along for the ride, but it’ll need to take a little in-flight break.
