Guide to Japan’s JESTA System: A Digital Travel Authorization for Tourists

JESTA becomes a new entry requirement for visa-free tourists to Japan starting in 2028. Learn how to apply and get the full guide here!

Japan is introducing the JESTA (Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization) to improve immigration security and efficiency.

This system aims to make entry into Japan easier for travelers through a fast, fully digital process without the need for physical documents.

What Is the JESTA System?

JESTA (Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is an electronic travel authorization system currently being developed by the Japanese government for visitors from visa-exempt countries.

It is designed to work similarly to the United States’ ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), where travelers must apply online before boarding a flight to Japan.

The main purpose of this system is to strengthen border control, prevent overstays, and streamline arrival procedures at airports.

The system is scheduled to be fully implemented by the end of fiscal year 2028.

Countries Required and Not Required to Use JESTA

JESTA will be mandatory for citizens of approximately 71 countries and regions that currently enjoy visa-free access to Japan.

These include:

Europe

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom.

Americas

Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Suriname, United States, Uruguay.

Asia

Brunei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates.

Oceania

Australia, New Zealand.

Africa

Lesotho, Mauritius, Tunisia.

Other regions

Qatar.

This means that although travelers from these countries do not need to apply for a traditional visa at an embassy, they will still be required to register online through the JESTA system before traveling.

Since JESTA is still under development, the list of eligible countries may change.

The Japanese government may adjust the requirements during testing and refinement before the system is fully launched by the end of fiscal year 2028.

How to Apply for JESTA Online

Once JESTA is officially launched, the application process will be simple and fully online:

  • Fill in personal details and travel information
  • Upload passport details and itinerary
  • Pay the application fee (official amount not yet announced)
  • Receive electronic travel authorization before departure to Japan

Without an approved JESTA authorization, passengers may be denied boarding, making it essential to apply before traveling.
