Spring is gearing up to bloom in spectacular fashion on Hachijojima as the 60th annual Hachijojima Freesia Festival prepares to enchant visitors from March 20 to April 5, 2026 — marking a major milestone for this beloved floral celebration.
A Festive Comeback With Extra Heart
After weathering significant typhoon damage in October last year, the island has bounced back with resilience, and this year’s festival takes on special meaning as a symbol of recovery and community spirit. Locals and visitors alike are invited to enjoy the blooms and island culture as the event returns in full force.
A Rainbow of Freesias Await

Fields at the Hachijojima Freesia Festival burst with hundreds of thousands of vibrant freesias in shades of yellow, white, pink, purple, and more — one of the most cheerful spectacles of early spring in Japan. Walking through the sea of blossoms with their sweet fragrance is pure seasonal bliss.
What’s Blooming This Year

This year’s festivities offer much more than just admiring flowers. Visitors can enjoy free entry to the freesia fields and even take part in freesia picking, with up to ten blooms per person to bring home as a fragrant souvenir. The charming Freesia Café will be serving local island treats and sweets, perfect for a relaxing break between strolls.

There will also be lively Hachijo taiko drum performances and hands-on workshops, giving guests a chance to feel the powerful rhythms of island culture.

Traditional dance experiences and the opportunity to dress up in a cheerful yellow Hachijo kimono add an extra cultural touch, while beautifully arranged photo spots and a fun stamp rally — complete with island-themed prizes — make the festival experience even more memorable.
