Sendai Uminomori Aquarium Hosts First ‘Underwater Hanami’ Sakura Event

This spring, a truly unique way to enjoy cherry blossom season is making its debut in northern Japan. Sendai Uminomori Aquarium is set to launch its first-ever “Underwater Hanami” event, offering visitors a fresh perspective on sakura—this time beneath the sea.

A New Way to Experience Cherry Blossoms

A New Way to Experience Cherry Blossoms

Running from March 20 to May 10, 2026, the event transforms the aquarium into a dreamy spring destination inspired by Japan’s iconic cherry blossom season.

Instead of looking up at blooming trees, visitors can enjoy a “Kaichu Hanami” (underwater flower viewing) experience, where marine life and sakura-themed displays come together in a serene, immersive setting. The concept highlights a new kind of connection—between the ocean and people, and between water and seasonal beauty.

“SAKURA Aquascape” Takes Center Stage

SAKURA Aquascape

At the heart of the event is a special tank installation called “SAKURA Aquascape.” Located on the first floor in the Oyashio Cold Sea zone, this exhibit features around 250 sakuradai (cherry-colored fish) swimming gracefully through the water, resembling petals in full bloom drifting through the current.

The soft pink hues of the fish, combined with carefully designed lighting and aquascaping, create a mesmerizing scene that mirrors the feeling of standing beneath fully blossomed cherry trees—only this time, it’s underwater.

Sea Lions Join the Sakura Celebration

In addition to the stunning underwater displays, the event also features a special sakura-themed performance by South American sea lions (otaria). As part of the popular “Otaria Friendly Time” program, these charming marine animals will take center stage at the viewing area to showcase their unique talents with a spring twist.

The male sea lion, Chen, uses his powerful breath to send cherry blossom petals fluttering into the air, while the female, Kahlua, creates a blooming sakura scene using a handmade stamp prepared by the trainers, decorating a tree branch illustration with delicate pink flowers.

The performance will be held at the Marine Mammal Plaza on the second floor, with showtimes available on the aquarium’s official website.

This delightful addition brings a playful and interactive element to the event, making the underwater hanami experience even more memorable

A Must-Visit Spring Destination in Sendai

Opened in 2015, Sendai Uminomori Aquarium is one of the largest aquariums in the Tohoku region, home to around 50,000 marine animals across roughly 300 species.

Known for its immersive exhibits and seasonal events, the aquarium continues to innovate with experiences that connect visitors to marine life in creative ways.
