If you thought Kyoto’s cherry blossom season couldn’t get any dreamier, think again. This spring, the iconic Heian Shrine is set to sparkle after dark with its annual Sakura Otoyo light-up event, bringing together illuminated blossoms and beautiful music for one unforgettable stretch of evenings.

While the shrine itself will remain its tranquil daytime self for most of the year, at the beginning of April it’ll transform into something straight out of a springtime fairytale. For five nights from April 1 to April 5, 2026, Heian Shrine will open its gates after sunset to showcase glowing cherry trees and live musical performances under the evening sky.

The name Sakura Otoyo comes from sakura (cherry blossoms), oto (sound), and yo (night) — a poetic way to say “cherry blossoms with music after dark.” At this event, pathways and gardens around the shrine light up from about 6:15 PM to 9 PM, with garden highlights like the Otenmon Gate, Daigokuden Hall, and the South and East Gardens bathed in gorgeous illumination.

And you don’t just stroll through pretty pink light — gentle live performances add to the mood. Concerts take place near the Seiho Pond in the East Garden, featuring a mix of artists spanning instrumental, contemporary, and vocal music genres. Since there’s no fixed seating, you’re free to wander, pause by a pond, or simply listen as the night breeze rustles through the petals.
