DisneySea and Tokyo Disneyland are certainly not unfamiliar to most people, especially for those who have visited Japan quite frequently.

These two equally popular theme parks are both part of Tokyo Disney Resort and are among the many favorite tourist destinations visited by both local and international travelers.

About Tokyo Disney Resort — DisneySea and Tokyo Disneyland

Tokyo Disney Resort is a Disney theme park resort area consisting of the two most visited theme parks in Japan; DisneySea and Tokyo Disneyland.

Tokyo Disney Resort is operated by The Oriental Land Company (a subsidiary of Keisei Electric Railway Company) under license from The Walt Disney Company.

The resort first opened in 1983 with only Tokyo Disneyland as its sole theme park. It continued to expand and opened its second park in 2001, named Tokyo DisneySea.

Since then, the resort has continued to grow and now includes 6 Disney Hotels, 6 non-Disney hotels, and a shopping complex.

At a glance, people who are not yet familiar might think that DisneySea and Disneyland are the same theme park in Tokyo. However, there are quite a number of notable differences between the two. What are they?

DisneySea vs Tokyo Disneyland

Below, Japantrips provides a breakdown of the differences between DisneySea and Tokyo Disneyland that you may need to know before visiting Japan.

Theme

From the name alone, we can already guess that, like other Disneyland parks, Tokyo Disneyland features themes based on magical stories from Disney works. Most of these stories are cheerful, filled with wonder, and very suitable for children.

In contrast, Tokyo DisneySea carries a more mature theme, with areas inspired by the natural beauty of various places around the world, including the Mediterranean and Venice.

Types of Attractions

If you enjoy more thrilling and adrenaline-pumping rides, you can visit DisneySea. Some of the exciting attractions include roller coasters that take you through winding tracks, such as Raging Spirits, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril, Flounder’s Flying Fish Coaster, and others.

Meanwhile, if you are traveling with family and bringing young children, you can visit Disneyland. Disneyland offers many rides that are safe for children and suitable for all ages, such as Western River Railroad, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions, and more.

Area Design

Tokyo Disneyland is built based on Disney stories about beautiful princesses and charming princes living in magnificent castles. That is why the design of Disneyland resembles a fairy-tale world loved by children.

On the other hand, DisneySea has a more mature design with many water-themed areas, in line with its ocean-inspired concept. As a result, the overall design of DisneySea appears more “realistic” compared to Disneyland.

Parade Schedule

Both DisneySea and Disneyland have their own parade schedules. However, the number of parades regularly held in Disneyland is much higher and more frequent compared to DisneySea.

In contrast, the number of parades at DisneySea is roughly half of those at Disneyland and is generally held more often at night.

Theme Park Locations

As widely known, Disneyland theme parks are located in various countries around the world. There are currently 6 Disneyland parks located in:

  • California and Florida (United States)
  • Paris (France)
  • Tokyo (Japan)
  • Shanghai (China)
  • Hong Kong

Meanwhile, DisneySea is the only one of its kind in the world and is located exclusively in Tokyo, Japan. Therefore, it is not surprising that many international tourists prefer visiting DisneySea over Disneyland when traveling to Japan.
