Autumn in Japan begins around September, bringing vibrant red and yellow foliage. Nagano Prefecture is one of the best places to enjoy the season, with many scenic spots offering beautiful autumn views.
Kamikochi
Although maple trees are relatively rare in Kamikochi, there is still plenty to enjoy during autumn. The main attraction is the karamatsu, or Japanese larch trees, along the Azusa River, which turn a beautiful golden yellow.
The leaves usually begin changing color around mid-October, with the peak season typically occurring during the third and fourth weeks of the month.
Matsumoto Castle
During autumn, visitors can enjoy reddish-orange foliage throughout central Matsumoto, especially around Matsumoto Castle, one of the city’s most popular attractions.
Daytime temperatures usually range from around 10°C to 20°C, making it an ideal season for walking around and exploring the city.
Shiga Kogen
Known for its beautiful and rich natural environment, Shiga Kogen has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
One of the best ways to enjoy autumn here is by walking around its ponds and wetlands. Popular spots include Onuma Pond and the Shijuhachiike wetlands.
Senjojiki Cirque
Located at an elevation of more than 2,600 meters, Senjojiki Cirque changes dramatically with the seasons. In autumn, the landscape becomes covered in fiery shades of red and orange.
Because of its high elevation, autumn foliage can be seen here earlier than in many other parts of Nagano. The season usually begins in early September and can last until early November.
Popular places to enjoy the scenery include the Ina Valley and the Southern Japanese Alps.
Karuizawa
One of the best places to admire autumn foliage in Karuizawa is Kumoba Pond. Deep red leaves are beautifully reflected on the surface of the water, creating a picturesque autumn scene.
Visitors can take a leisurely walk around the pond or enjoy a cup of tea at the nearby Kumoba-tei restaurant.
Iwatake Mountain Resort
Iwatake Mountain Resort is a popular destination among younger visitors in Hakuba. From the terrace at the top of the resort, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding autumn landscape.
During the season, colorful foliage gradually spreads down the mountains, framed by snow-dusted peaks above and green valleys below.
Known as Sandan Kōyō, or “three-tier autumn foliage,” this natural phenomenon is one of Hakuba’s most impressive seasonal sights.
Tsugaike Nature Garden
Tsugaike Nature Garden is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Hakuba.
Visitors can take a gondola up to an elevation of around 1,900 meters and begin their hike from there while enjoying the beautiful autumn scenery along the way.
Togakushi
One of the most popular ways to enjoy autumn in Togakushi is by walking to Togakushi Okusha Shrine.
The path leading to the shrine is lined with massive cedar trees that are around 400 years old, while the shrine itself sits against the impressive backdrop of the Togakushi Mountains.
Another popular attraction is Kagami Pond, where the calm surface of the water reflects beautiful views of Mount Togakushi.
Komoro Kaikoen Park
Komoro Kaikoen Park was once the site of Komoro Castle. Although the castle no longer stands, visitors can still see remnants such as the castle gates and stone walls.
Surrounded by forest, the park offers a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can enjoy both autumn scenery and traces of the area’s long history.
Norikura Kogen
Many accommodations around Norikura Kogen are guesthouses and traditional inns, creating a friendly atmosphere where visitors can interact with one another. Some accommodations also offer natural hot spring baths.
The beautiful autumn foliage in the area is best enjoyed by hiking through the surrounding countryside.
